I had some inquiries about my Daily Literacy Practice for 1st grade, so I thought I’d show a little more of it while the sale is still going on so you can get it at a bargain price!
First of all… it’s available as an entire, VERY THOROUGH, full-year – 232 page unit OR you can grab it in 4 separate units.
Second, it gets increasingly more difficult as you work through the student book. Because I use it every day, it was necessary for it to grow in depth and rigor. The build in complexity makes sense. It is not thematic in nature. It covers phonics and high-frequency words in a manner that is sensical and effective. Beyond that it is aligned with common core. The standards are noted on each page.
Here is an example of the what the first few pages are like.
With the beginning of the year in mind, the initial sections focus on consonants, then move to short vowels. These are the first couple of pages that are perfect to ease the kiddos back into school
As the workbook progresses, the students are asked to write and read more. We just did the page on the right in class today.
Students are encouraged to use their higher-level thinking skills as they progress through the book. The questions become quite a bit more challenging and provide ample opportunity for students to practice answering questions with complete sentences while utilizing higher orders of thinking.
As you know, I LOVE having my kids EXPLAIN in order to demonstrate their knowledge. I find pages like these, especially the one on the left, very effective in encouraging a thorough understanding of the phonic rules we learn in first grade. I have never been able to find anything like this anywhere and since I do this type of questioning so much in my lessons, I felt it was important that the kids have a chance to provide these type of written answers as well.
Third, every page in this unit is absolutely no prep. I have mine bound in a workbook the kids keep in their desks. However, you could just make copies of the pages you are going to use each week.
With 232 pages, Daily Literacy Practice is absolutely that… daily practice! Some pages are perfect for independent practice and review. Others are great to use with direct lessons.
Check out the word lists to see what is covered in this HUGE pack. These pages come out of the teacher handbook that is included with the unit. The teacher handbook is extensive in itself and explains how I use the material, the types of student responses that are expected and so much more.
If you love my Morning Wake-Up, you’ll love this, too. Both play a key part in my literacy program. I can’t say enough about this kind of practice and instruction.
