I have a little March poem FREEBIE for you today.
As I’ve mentioned before, we do a poem each month to help with the Oral Language/Speaking standards. It helps build speaking confidence and overcome those presentation in front of others fears.
I don’t have huge expectations with these poems. I simply request that the kiddos practice it (in class, at recess, at home, alone and with friends) and be ready to recite it later in the month.
I try to keep the assignment relaxed and non-confrontational. But, at the same time, I don’t give anyone a “pass”. Everybody has to do it. Everyone has to get up in front of the rest of us and say the poem. We are all about encouragement and having fun during these quasi-presentations. No pressure. In the beginning, these are a little rough. But as the year moves on, the kiddos relax and realize it’s no big deal.
So that’s the goal – to ensure them that talking to a friend, or talking to a group – is no big deal. We are taking baby-steps in that direction in first grade. 🙂
