Permanent Art Tile Note Holders and Some Teacher Appreciation

Happy Teacher Appreciation week peeps!

I have a couple of freebies for you to start the week off right and to help you feel appreciated.

The first one I am mentioning because I have to go shopping for it this afternoon – so it is on my mind.

I have to go shopping for Sharpies. I know – it’s a busy day people. Sharpie shopping. Try not to be jealous of my Sundays.

I am hoping to find a few packs on sale.

For Mother’s Day each year my kiddos make tile note holders for their moms or any other special lady they have in their lives.

On Friday I gave the kids a piece of paper cut to the same size as the tile and told them to make a “rough draft” of what they want their Mother’s Day tile look like.

It’s good to let them practice and have something to look at when they go to do the finished product. That way there are no preconceived notions about how much they can fit in that small square.

This week I will give them each a ceramic tile and let them have access to the Sharpies.

The Sharpies, peeps.

Permanent marker.

They LOVE Sharpies. It’s the small things. 🙂

This is why I need to go get more pens. I used to do these in small groups – a few kids at a time. So I didn’t need a whole lot of Sharpies. But nowadays, with 30, it just takes too long. So I want to get a few more sets so that each table group has all the colors they need and the whole class can work on this at once.

After the kids finish, I take all of the tiles outside and lay them on piece of butcher paper.

Then I spray them with a light misting of lacquer. Not to make them shiny (they are already shiny) – just to SET the ink so that it lasts and lasts. Otherwise, even though it is permanent, the color will eventually run when/if it gets wet.

After that, I turn them over, write the year on them and affix a clothespin to the bottom center with hot glue.

This little Mom’s Day project could not be easier.

There is basically NO prep or work for me. Spray it and glue on a clothespin and my part is done!

The kiddos mom’s use the permanent art tile to hold important notes, receipts or whatever….

And I’m super excited because this year, my kiddos are going to have a VERY special element to clip in their note holders.

Spa Mom peeps!
How incredibly CUTE is she?
For this I decreased the black lines in Fluttering Through First Grade‘s resource by 50% so that it would be small enough to clip into our permanent art tile note holder. Since I reduced it so much, I used very little paper. Prepping for this project was ridiculously quick and easy. My favorite kind of project! 🙂

So… go grab Spa Mom – you won’t regret it.

Ok… and now to further the whole I appreciate you, you are fabulous and much loved, let me give you stuff theme….head over to my FB page. Some friends and I are kicking of Teacher Appreciation Week in a big way! We have a fabulous hop happening right now. (NOW CLOSED)You can pick up some amazing samples from some of our most popular resources!

Have a fabulous week peeps!

That is SUPER cute, Traci. I think I'll do that, too. Thank you!
One question: How are the tiles standing up? Is it the clothes pin that balances them?

I love the idea! Same question as the person above me…where do you get the tiles and lacquer? I also have a large class (29), so I would like to buy them in bulk …

Yes you can buy the tiles in bulk. A big box of them will last you a while. You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes… same with the lacquer. You barely need any of the lacquer… just a very thin mist… a couple of coats at the most.

I love this idea so I bought the tiles and got the spray to coat. I had my daughter make an example. When I sprayed it the color all ran!!! I did use Sharpies too. Is there a special lacquer to use? Thanks.

Hi Amy. Be sure you are spraying from a distance (at least a foot) and only do a VERY light coat. You don’t need much at all.
