Winter-Themed Activities

I’ve been so good about relaxing, not fretting, not working this break. But then I went and read Reagan’s post {yep, I’m totally blaming you 😛 } and started to get a little bit nervous. Winter break is coming to an end REALLY quick. I should be putting some thought into January. Getting prepared. Square things away. blah blah blah. Luckily, I do have a few winter-themed activities up my sleeve!

PENGUIN TEAR ART

Penguin Tear Art

Aren’t they cute? I threw the FREEBIE instructions for this Penguin Tear Art up on in my store. You can download it HERE. I really like to do this with my class. They always turn out SO cute and completely different. Giving them scrap butcher paper to tear works best for this project.

My Place on the Map! WHERE I LIVE

Our social studies theme for January is Our World. It’s based on the standard “Students will locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the seven continents, and the four oceans.”
So, for that we have Where I Live.

Where I Live - My Place on the Map Where I Live - My Place on the Map Where I Live Inside Pages Where I Live Vocabulary Where I Live - My Place on the Map

My Place on the Map has never been so adorable. This really helps my kiddos understand where they live in comparison to the universe!

WINTER WRITING ACTIVITIES

January is when we really start to step up our writing expectations. In addition to our daily Engaging Writing lessons, we work in some fun (Winter-Themed Writing Activities). This resource incorporates snowmen and snowflakes. The playful fun of it all helps my kiddos dive back into the swing of things.

Part of this unit has an activity that the kids complete about a time they thought they might be lost. Nearly every child has experienced that panicky feeling for at least a moment in their little lives and they L.O.V.E. sharing their stories. Before we complete this sheet I always read:
This is my Amazon affiliate link for this book.
It’s about a bear who ventured where his mama told him not to go… out of her sight. It’s a cute story and it FEELS good. Like literally feels… as in tactile. It has all these soft and glittery parts. The kids aren’t allowed to touch until they’ve washed their hands… used wipes… and hand sanitizer. One of my little ones made that rule a few years ago… and we’ve just stuck with it. hahaha. I highly recommend Snow Bear.

SUPER PENGUIN TO THE RESCUE

I LOVE HIM! So do the kids! I truly think it’s their favorite narrative writing lesson. This is a week-long writing project that culminates in the sweet and fun Super Penguin craft.  Click HERE to grab Super Penguin.
I absolutely love how the kiddos choose an assortment of ways to assemble Super Penguin. It makes for a very fun bulletin board!
