Ready for Writing – Comprehensive Writing Program for 1st & 2nd Grade
Teaching writing is a stress inducer for a lot of teachers. Ready for Writing is here to help!
During my first couple years of teaching, writing time was THE area that frustrated me the most. I always loved writing, but teaching it was so completely different from doing it. The many techniques and strategies I read about and tried to implement, just muddled the “art” of it, took up far too much time, and missed the mark with my little ones. I absolutely HATED my writing block.
One day over lunch, My dear friend, Annie from The Moffatt Girls, and I were talking about the whole writing block dilemma. We discussed how we struggled to find a way to teach writing in a way that made sense, was effective and simple. We knew this was an area of frustration for many teachers and we wanted to write a program that shared what we’ve learned to make it easier for our teacher friends and their kiddos to master those writing standards and become strong writers.
From there, happily, Ready for Writing was born. There is SO much to this program! It is hard to squeeze it all into one post! It is very exciting to finally have the program available to everyone. The fabulous comments from teachers and homeschoolers using the program are beyond wonderful!
The Program Backbone
Ready for Writing is based on four basic principles:
- Each lesson is CCSS aligned, standards mastery focused, and focuses on skill mastery through lessons, visuals, read-alouds, practice and application.
- The program is genre specific. The lessons increase student schema in narrative, expository and opinion writing genres. This is accomplished through in-depth instruction in one genre at a time. The program includes 10 weeks of instruction for each genre.
- Both 1st and 2nd grade skills are covered withinReady for Writing. This allows for use over the period of 2-years for teachers who loop with their kiddos, have multi-age classrooms, or a group of students who require differentiated activities.
- Ready for Writing is quick and simple with minimal prep. The primary focus is interactive learning through lessons, activities and interactive note flip books where students record their growing knowledge.
The first part of the program is the comprehensive teacher’s manual. This component guides writing instruction through daily lessons. The step-by-step outline of how to assemble the teacher’s manual provides details to help assemble this beautiful and very large writing program.
30 weeks of lessons are laid out in an easy to follow daily format. They include approximate time icons to help with planning writing blocks.
The lesson plans also include:
- differentiation notes
- suggested samples
- assessment suggestions
- short-cut symbol/color-coded format
Teaching the Genres
Each genre is introduced with an overview as well as an explanation on how to best incorporate that particular writing style into your routine.
A short “prep” list of what is needed during each genre’s 10-week unit is noted in the section intro.
Full color anchor charts provide quick display opportunities. The graphic reminders are a tremendous support for students (and teachers). They are also color-coded to match the components of each genre.
Reading and listening to awesome writing is a fabulous way to better understand HOW to write. Ready for Writing™ includes a list of books that are a perfect addition to any classroom library!
Flip Books and The Writers Quick Reference
The Interactive Flip Book provides student support throughout each 10-week unit. This key component covers each aspect of the writing genre in detail using key words, definitions and examples.
The symbol and color-coded elements are one of the may unique parts of this program. They helps students and teachers recognize the component being covered and how all of the pieces correlate. Students use these color-codes on the flip books and the activities. The teacher’s manual is symbol and color-coded in the same manner.
The Writers Quick Reference is a writing tool for the entire year. It includes sections for dead word alternatives, transition words and phrases specific to all three genres, and a quick spelling reference section. Because it is important the kiddos have quick access to this, I have them keep this handy little book in their desks in their “SAVE” file. From there, they can refer to it often, not just during writing. It is an extremely helpful tool.
Beyond the lessons, there are activities that allow students time to practice, work with a partner or small group, or prove their mastery as an assessment.
One of the most important literacy development components is complex text. Ready for Writing™ includes complex text in some of the activities to enrich the task. Students provide text-evidence based evidence and answers in genre specific tasks.
These activities are awesome for whole and small group work.
Because practice is imperative, Ready for Writing includes lots of practice opportunities for all three genres. This not only increases their writing skill schema, it allows for differentiation and “leveling up” growth as their skills and knowledge increase.
Another key component that Ready for Writing™ takes into account is the important of informational text. The NGSS standards for both 1st and 2nd grade are represented in some of the expository text within the practice pages. This is a fabulous way to ensure cross-curriculum attention during class lessons.
Grammar, Writing Plans and Organizers, Final Draft Stationery
As students deepen their genre knowledge, they finalize the unit with paragraph production and story writing. Their thoughts and concepts are managed in graphic organizers and writing plans. Ultimately they learn to apply all of this into a proper paragraph.
Additionally, Ready for Writing™ incorporates grammar practice sheets. These help students improve creativity and novelty in their writing style.
Comprehensive, Practical, Effective and Engaging
Ready for Writing™ is the complete package.
We developed Ready for Writing™ to share our passion for keeping things simple and effective. The program provides teachers and students an alternative to the regiment of “workshop” style writing blocks and a system superior to the lacking writing lessons including in many ELA adoptions. Ready for Writing™ is the answer to the writing block challenge! This comprehensive writing curriculum is the ONLY writing program you will need!
We absolutely love Ready for Writing™ and are thrilled that so many of our teacher friends and their kiddos are enjoying it too!
